How much control do you think you have when you play a video game? The controller is in your hands; no one else has access to it, so why wouldn't you feel totally in control, right? Well, because you have minimal power over your character's abilities, what places you can go with it, what tasks can and need to be completed and how likely you will succeed. The real power belongs to the programmer, just like in real life.

According to cognitive neuroscientists, we are conscious of only about five per cent of our cognitive activity, so most of our decisions, actions, emotions, and behaviour depend on ninety-five per cent of brain activity that goes beyond our conscious awareness. We all unconsciously pick up the thought patterns and beliefs of the people who played important roles during our upbringing. By adulthood, their mindsets are ingrained into our minds. Those thought patterns, ideas and beliefs we borrow from them provide us with a sense of self and strongly influence our emotional states, behaviour and habits. It also determines how we perceive and interpret ourselves and the world around us. That is, we look out to confirm what our often unconscious mindset already believes to be true, whether that serves or hinders us in our lives. What goes on in our pre-programmed minds reflects who we are and what kind of life we live, and in a very real sense, we are the products of our unconscious mindsets.
We like to tell ourselves that we control our choices, views, attitudes, habits, beliefs, etc. But the truth is our pre-programmed unconscious minds run the show. Our sense of control comes from having a controller at our disposal, that is our consciousness. We need to find a way to influence the program that has been ingrained into our minds to expand our control over who we are and what lives we live.
